Function / Content

This series consists of a summons book which was used to record the following information; number, date of issue, name of Magistrate, name of complainant, name of defendant, offence, date received, date served, by whom served, where served, how served, date of hearing and result, and date proof returned. The summons book was initially used by the Nectar Brook Police Station (1897-1899) in South Australia before being transferred to the Arltunga Police Station (1899-1944). The summons book appears to have not been used consistently with entries only covering the following years; 1897-1898, 1907-1908, 1910-1911, 1916, 1918, 1923, 1925-1927, 1937 and 1940. The entries is the summons book are at the front of the volume and take up 7 double-pages; midway through the volume there is also a brief entry regarding prisoners property which is undated. Some language used in these records (which reflects the language used at the time the records were created) may be offensive. This series may contain references to Aboriginal people who have died, which may cause sadness and distress to their relatives. No offence has been intended by making these records available.
